A 3-project series to up your colorwork game! You can join me for individual classes or the whole month. Together we will work through 3 different colorwork projects, starting with basic colorwork, working through the kinks of stranding and catching long floats, and finishing with a quick to knit, super-squishy mosaic work cowl.
Sign up for all three and get a bonus wrap up class on the 27th to review the techniques and finish up the projects from the month!
Recommended Skill Level – Confident beginner
Skills Required – knitting, purling, knitting in the round on circular and DPN needles
Week 2 – 02/13: Passerine Hat A fingering weight hat that features a bird motif – perfect for Oregon! This class will reiterate the tension and yarn management from the previous week, with a strong emphasis on catching long floats in complex colorwork.
Materials: Fingering weight yarn in 2 colors: 160 yds of the main color, 60 yds of the counter color (the birds); recommended yarns: Malabrigo Sock, Bumblebirch Wellspring or Forage, Three Irish Girls
US 2 (2.75mm) 16” circular needle
US 3 (3.25mm) 16” circular needle and DPNs
Stitch marker (1 needed, additional 14 optional for colorwork charting)
Finished Size: One size fits most adult women
Homework: Work Instructions 1-3 as per the pattern (cast on, brim and 3 rnds of stockinette)
Week 3 – 02/20: Hashtag Cowl An Aran weight cowl with a # motif, talk about staying on trend!!! This class will focus on how mosaic knitting differs from stranded colorwork and how best to apply the technique.
Materials: Aran weight yarn in 2 colors: 185 yds of Color A (the ribbing color) and 125 yds of Color B (the background color in the body of the cowl); recommended yarn: Cascade 220 Superwash Aran
US 10 (6mm) 24” circular needle
Finished Size: 11” tall, 30” circumference
Homework: Work Instructions Rnds 1-10 as per pattern (cast on, ribbing)
Week 4 - 02/27: Colorwork Wrap Up. Bring one, two, or all three of your previous weeks’ projects and get them finished! We’ll review each of the skills learned in the previous weeks’ classes as needed and make sure you’re well on your way to being a colorwork guru!
